The Essence of Protecting Your Wireless Network Router

For people who have wireless router in their homes or their offices, it is absolutely essential that you ensure your computer is protected by securing your router as well. You really don’t want to leave your computer open and accessible to people who want to violate your privacy and steal whatever it is that you have stored in your computer.

The benefits of a wireless router

There are a whole lot of reasons for people to use a wireless networking router. These people know that these devices are quite easy to use and allow a person to move about easily in their homes or offices. There are no cables to connect and there is also no need at all for a cable modem. If you have a wireless router you have all the freedom you need. But with all types of freedom you have to make sure that it is secured at all costs.

How does your wireless network router become insecure?

Wireless routers give off signals that extend far beyond the immediate reach of your home or your office. Because of this, anyone who lives or stays near your home or office and has a very powerful antenna can easily make use of commonly available software to scan all the data on your own network. These people most times don’t have to be in a stationary position to carry out their own form of intrusion. All they have to do is hang around the area; they may be in car or passing by your home or office.

How can you protect your wireless network from hackers?

A lot of different things can be done which secure your wireless network and made all the more secure. You an easily access your router and control the relative strength of the signal that your router is transmitting. You can also consider the direction of the signal as well. You should test how low your signal can possibly be for you to use it. You should also take extra care because some very skilled hackers can use certain types of software in order to detect different types of signals.

Something else that may offer you a measure of security is a password. Passwords protect your router from access to people who shouldn’t have access to it. Most times when you set up a new router the software may give you a standard password. Hackers are always aware of the standard and default passwords. By changing the default password you can easily make it difficult for hackers to get access to your computer.

You should also take the time out to limit the number of user addresses that are allocated on your router. What this means is that your router can only assign as much addresses as you can to valid users only. If everyone in your home or business is logged on to the network, other people who want to log on illegally can’t do so. If people want to log on to your network and they can’t then you can know that a hacker may be using the network. You should ensure that your network is secure at all times. This way you protect yourself or you may end up losing more that you bargained for.
